چکیده

Deciding whether two n-point sets A,B ∈ R are congruent is a fundamental problem in geometric pattern matching. When the dimension d is unbounded, the problem is equivalent to graph isomorphism and is conjectured to be in FPT. When |A| = m < |B| = n, the problem becomes that of deciding whether A is congruent to a subset of B and is known to be NP-complete. We show that point subset congruence, with d as a parameter, is W[1]-hard, and that it cannot be solved in O(mn)-time, unless SNP ⊂ DTIME(2). This shows that, unless FPT = W[1], the problem of finding an isometry of A that minimizes its directed Hausdorff distance, or its Earth Mover’s Distance, to B, is not in FPT.

Parameterized matching on non-linear structures

The classical pattern matching paradigm is that of seeking occurrences of one string in another, where both strings are drawn from an alphabet set Σ. In the parameterized pattern matching model, a consistent renaming of symbols from Σ is allowed in a match. The parameterized matching paradigm has proven useful in problems in software engineering, computer vision, and other applications. In clas...

The Parameterized Complexity of the Rectangle Stabbing Problem and Its Variants

We study an NP-complete geometric covering problem called d-Dimensional Rectangle Stabbing, where, given a set of axis-parallel d-dimensional hyperrectangles, a set of axis-parallel (d − 1)-dimensional hyperplanes and a positive integer k, the question is whether one can select at most k of the hyperplanes such that every hyperrectangle is intersected by at least one of these hyperplanes. This ...

Structurally Parameterized $d$-Scattered Set

In d-Scattered Set we are given an (edge-weighted) graph and are asked to select at least k vertices, so that the distance between any pair is at least d, thus generalizing Independent Set. We provide upper and lower bounds on the complexity of this problem with respect to various standard graph parameters. In particular, we show the following: • For any d ≥ 2, an O∗(dtw)-time algorithm, where ...

Closest Substring Problems with Small Distances

We study two pattern matching problems that are motivated by applications in computational biology. In the Closest Substring problem k strings s1, . . ., sk are given, and the task is to find a string s of length L such that each string si has a consecutive substring of length L whose distance is at most d from s. We present two algorithms that aim to be efficient for small fixed values of d an...

Fast Approximate Point Set Matching for Information Retrieval

We investigate randomised algorithms for subset matching with spatial point sets—given two sets of d-dimensional points: a data set T consisting of n points and a pattern P consisting of m points, find the largest match for a subset of the pattern in the data set. This problem is known to be 3-SUM hard and so unlikely to be solvable exactly in subquadratic time. We present an efficient bit-para...
